A special Open Enrollment period for Americans in need of health insurance has been created by President Biden. From February 15 through May 15, the government marketplace will reopen for those who don’t have any health insurance coverage, have recently lost benefits due to COVID19 or wish to change their current plans. As COVID19 is considered a “qualifying life event” for all Americans, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans will be available through state and national exchanges.
For Virginians losing coverage due to a furlough or job loss, continuing health coverage via COBRA may be offered by their employer. It’s important to note that COBRA may not always be the best option as there is typically a cost associated with these benefits. Right now, around 15 million Americans lack health insurance and would be eligible for Obamacare, with about four million qualifying for a plan without premiums.
